A Man Named Pearl

Product Description

Responding to an offhanded and racist remark made by one of his neighbors in Bishopville, South Carolina, sharecropper's son Pearl Fryar exercised his artistic gifts in 1984 by constructing a beautiful topiary garden that inspired love, attention, and respect. This documentary chronicles Fryar's moving life story and reveals how one man's grand gesture came to enrich so many lives. 78 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; bonus audio CD; bonus footage; interviews.

  • Balanced gracefully on a ladder, deftly carving with his electric hedge trimmer, Pearl Fryar has the elegance and strength of a dancer. He is, by contrast, a topiary sculptor, an artist whose medium is discarded or junk plant life and whose canvas is his magical and fantastical garden. A MAN NAMED PEARL chronicles the story of Pearl's dazzling garden as well as his extraordinary life, both of

4.0 out of 5 stars In Pearl Fryar's hands, everything grows, October 22, 2008

Pearl Fryar is an extraordinary man, self-made to be sure. The son of a sharecropper, he seemingly has an innate sense about the way plants grow, blessed with a keen, artistic mind. Combined, these talents have made him almost obsessed about turning his modest, 3-acre property in tiny Bishopville, South Carolina into a work of topiary art. Using cast-off plants from a local greenhouse, he creates and beautiful Eden in his backyard. The film is a paean to his efforts, his vision and his effect on his community.

There's a tendency to see Pearl as a sort of backwoods topiary savant. But listen to him speak to college art classes, and you will hear a articulate man who embodies the artistic impulse and inspires students to leave their sketchbooks behind and reach into their hearts. He may not have gained his knowledge from textbooks, but from Nature itself, the source of the textbooks. The film interviews Pearl, his wife and son, neighbors, his pastor and his many friends. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Master of Topiary, January 20, 2009

This review is from: A Man Named Pearl (DVD)
This is a fascinating documentary about Pearl Fryar, a South Carolina man who has transformed his grounds into a dizzying display of plant sculptures. Fryar had no prior experience or knowledge of topiary and his only introduction to it was a brief demonstration at a local nursery. He immediately started landscaping his property with all kinds of evergreens and began training them into stunning shapes and designs with hedge trimmers and chainsaws. Interviews with Fryar's neighbors, friends and family show the influence of his work on the townspeople, young people (he regularly speaks to college students and give tours to grade school students) and tourism for the town. A remarkable man and film, very uplifting!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty darned good., August 7, 2008

After 45 years of homemaking I finally found a solution to dull instruments. I now own three of these products for sharpening; knives, scissors and this one for garden tools. I've used it on all of my larger objects. I call it "sharpening for dummies" because I have no skills but want sharp garden tools. If only they made a mini sharpener so that I didn't have to disasemble my pruning shears I'd be a very happy camper.

This is a cheap, simple tool to use, and gives good results. I've used it to sharpen a few clippers, hedge trimmers, and the lawn mower blade on a cordless Black & Decker lawnmower which was pitted and dulled. All tools I used it on seem to perform noticeably better than before.

Worked great on my bypass pruners (large and small) and my grass shears (all Corona drop-forged). My large pruner was very dull after many years of use and the Accu Sharp renewed the blade better than I expected. On the first few passes it actually took off visible little pigtails of metal shavings as it honed the cutting blade to a precise, uniform and shiny-new edge. I can't imagine a professional sharpener doing a better job. I accidentally cut my thumb with a light bump against the sharpened blade! Totally my fault - I wasn't using the accusharp at the time. I held the sharpener at an angle keeping one side of the "V" shaped sharpening notch flat against the flat side of the cutting blade. This was not difficult to do - in fact the Accusharp seemed to "lock in" comfortably at this off-center angle. For the Coronas no dis-assembly was required. I spray the blades with WD40 to maintain the edges between use. I've only sharpened my tools once so far so I can't say how long the... Read more

Black & Decker GH610 Grass Hog 14-Inch 5.5 amp Electric String Trimmer and Edger

Amazon.com Product Description

Every home lawn enthusiast needs a reliable trimmer. When it comes to performance in the front or back yard, the Grass Hog 14-inch automatic feed string trimmer and edger provides what you need. This tool is powered by a 4.8 Amp electric motor that spins the line at 9,500 rpm and gives you a 14-inch cutting swath. Head adjustment is quick and easy, too, when the Groom'N'Edge head rotates 180 degrees; just press the button, rotate the handle and wait for it to lock in place. The patented cord retention system helps prevent accidental unplugging while in use. This trimmer comes equipped with an auxiliary handle for added comfort and control. The handle rotates a full 360 degrees and the soft grip can be moved up and down to ensure the perfect fit, whatever size the operator may be. A flip-down edge guide ensures precise trimming and edging work. At just 5.2 pounds, this product is easy for just about anyone to use. This product is backed by a 2-year full warranty. --Carl Thress

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Too bad, May 28, 2003

This review is from: Black & Decker GH610 Grass Hog 14-Inch 5.5 amp Electric String Trimmer and Edger (Lawn & Patio)
I have traditionally found that B&D lawn tools are pretty good and this weed wacker works just fine. It trims well, the "rotating head action" helps with edging, and it is reasonably powerful. I only gave it three stars (I would actually give it two and a half if I could) because 1) It does use a lot of string. I would also suggest wearing long pants when using this thing because the string advances automatically during use and the piece that is cut off goes flying. I got a couple of "wacks" on my legs from this. My daughter got hit once too so keep your kids out of range. I also found that it works better if you buy the replacement spools rather that buying string and winding it up yourself. I consider myself somewhat handy but the line advancement never worked right when I purchased the string seperately (much cheaper) and wrapped it through/around the spool myself. The replacement spools get pricey after a while. Also, 2) I think this thing is a bit noisy. Especially when... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Add A Grass Gator to Your Grass Hog-Perfect!, April 18, 2006
By
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Black & Decker GH610 Grass Hog 14-Inch 5.5 amp Electric String Trimmer and Edger (Lawn & Patio)
I just purchased one of these and it is almost perfect. I had a small string one and as stated in the other reviews, they use a lot of string and it is a pain replacing the spool and the string ones never cut like the gas ones. We all know the problems with the gas ones, but boy can they knock down the weeds. Well I was at Home Depot and spotted the perfect solution. This Grass Hog and the Grass Gator Electric Multi-Fit. No more string and with the power of the Black and Decker, I'm in Hog Heaven.(You knew that was coming.) The Grass Gator goes on easy and has a tough nylon blade, but it cuts like a metal blade, the kind you find only on gas powered trimmers. I managed to wack our fence a couple of times with the blades and they both survived the impact and the fence was fine. The replacement blades are easy to install and not very expensive. This is electric weed-wacking at its best. Perfect-Catherine

I bought this at Lowe's and enjoy it on my 1/2 acre. I never had one before but knew I didn't want a gas trimmer for noise and having to yank on a string like a mower. I find the noise level acceptable. True I keep at least one roll of string on hand since I use this to clean out the open ditch in front of my house. But so easy to replace (just pop out the old and in with the new) I can't complain. And long pants are a MUST. One stinging gash will speak volumes to you.
